Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
